It's time to head to New York, for the 25th Tribeca Festival, and thanks to Tom Brumpton we have a short film that has approached familiar ideas, but in a completely new, fresh way! THEN, we get to sit down with a first time director, and discover the impetus for the film, the importance of not only showcasing Filipino Martial Arts, but ensuring that the fight scenes felt realistic. Delivering on the feeling of not being excepted, all the nuance behind that, as well as from the Filipino gym and team owner. In 11 minutes we get such a rich story, it really enables us to have a super compelling chat, that you won't want to miss!!!
'Kaya (ᜃᜌ)' is the directorial debut from Isabel Lamers, which she also wrote. Half-Filipina Nia (Isabel Lamers) tries to join a Filipino Martial Arts team to prove herself “Filipino enough.”

Isabel Lamers
Writer, Director, Producer, Actress, Stunt Woman
Isabel Lamers is a Filipina-German actress, action actor and filmmaker. She was raised bilingually in both the Philippines and Germany. She has an extensive international background, having worked across Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and the US. Isabel's notable acting credits include Tar, Club Zero (a 2023 Cannes Palme d'Or nominee) and most recently Black Nights Tallinn main selection Philippine feature SISA. She also featured in "TÁR" (2022) and "Kleo" (2024). KAYA (2026), Isabel's directorial debut, had it's world premiere at the acclaimed Tribeca Festival. The martial arts short proof of concept, which Isabel wrote, directed and starred in, using Filipino martial arts as a means to explore the character's mixed-race identity. Isabel studied acting at the Identity School of Acting in London and at AMAW in London and LA. She is fluent in English, German, French and Spanish, with a good understanding of Tagalog and Dutch.

The Tribeca Festival is an annual film festival organized by Tribeca Enterprises. It takes place each spring in New York City, showcasing a diverse selection of film, episodic, talks, music, games, art, and immersive programming. The festival was founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff in 2002 to spur the economic and cultural revitalization of Lower Manhattan following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. Until 2020, the festival was known as the Tribeca Film Festival.
