The beauty of expansive, long-form conversation, is that it can really get under the skin of topics many just skate over, and demystify preconceived notions. So when Falco's Imani Charles came with the opportunity to speak with Maya Annik Bedward about her feature directorial debut, which was dealing with topics & notions not normally discussed, of course we were eager to get that done! And what an interesting, expansive confab was had. Maya was incredibly open about the whole process, giving her entire team their flowers and talking about Haiti & Vodou with so much care, and passion, it was clear she was truly meant to shine a light on these topics! We have a documentary that peels back the curtain on identity, cultural appropriation, stigmatization, and discrimination around tattoos in the Philippines. It also explores through the director, what it means to be Filipino in Canada and the Philippines. THEN, we sit down with the director of the film, and his producer, to really get some insights into the source of the feelings, why the documentary made sense, what it was like being back in the Philippines, and traveling to Buscalan. As well as the experience of being around Apo Whang-od and her very first apprentice Grace Palicas!
